It’s official: even Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, will have its own mosque.

Islam will thus have ‘conquered’ the last EU country that has so far had no designated building of worship for Muslims. Near the city centre, the new Islamic centre will also include restaurants and a gym and will be financed mainly by donations from Qatar. The mosque itself, in the shape of a large cube with a cupola for prayer inside, will be 24m high, with the adjacent minaret standing 40m high. It is the realisation of a dream cherished by the large community of Bosniac Muslims in the small country for almost half a century. Slovenia’s Muslims demanded a place of worship in the late 1960s, during the period of communist Yugoslavia, with no success. “Europe would not be so culturally rich without Islam,” said the Slovenian Prime Minister.
