The mosque, located on Main Street just west of downtown, opened in 2013. Muslim worshippers arriving at the mosque Friday for worship services — Friday is the Muslim day of the week for gathering services similar to Sunday for Christians —found a back door glass broken, said Abdul Khanani, one of the mosque’s elders.
“It looks like it was vandalism and we are very thankful for the Rock Hill Police Department coming so quickly to investigate and look into it,” said James “Jumah” Moore, executive director of the mosque.
The mosque is called Masjid-al-Salaam, which translates to mosque of peace. Area Muslims affiliated with the Islamic Center of South Carolina spent more than five years building the mosque. During construction and afterward, mosque officials reported only a couple incidents of minor vandalism.
Rock Hill Police Department officers were at the mosque during Friday services that went on uninterrupted but no other problems were reported.
