Thousands of Shia Muslims took to the streets across Pakistan Saturday to protest a powerful bomb blast at a mosque in Sindh province during Friday prayers, killing at least 58 people and wounding more than 50 others, some seriously.

In the city of Shikarpur, the site of the blast, thousands of minority Shia mourners held a mass funeral for the dead, VOA said.

The bombing occurred in the Lakidar area of Shikarpur, around 470 kilometers north of the port city of Karachi.

The extremists have often targeted religious institutions of Shias who make up a fifth of Pakistan's population. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Friday he is appalled by "such vicious targeting of people on account of their religious affiliation."  He called on Pakistan's government to redouble its efforts to protect religious and ethnic minorities. Meanwhile, Iran Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Saturday strongly condemned the terrorist bombing.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, she emphasized the importance of unity in the Muslim world. Afkham underscored that the terrorist act is against Islam's religious teachings and human values.
Jundullah terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the recent attack, but pro-Taliban terrorists usually take responsibility for similar attacks in the violence-wracked country. This is also the latest deadly incident in a wave of violence against the Shia Muslim community in Pakistan.
Pro-Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists have imposed an economic blockade against the Shia-dominated population areas across the volatile northwest. Shia Muslims in Pakistan said the government must take decisive action against the forces involved in the targeted killings. They also accuse Islamabad of failing to provide security for the Muslim community.
